FRIENDLY UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS |
Hop on Over to University Farm's Annual Easter Egg Hunt The University Farm Neighborhood Association (UFNA) will sponsor its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 14. The event will start at University Farm Park at 10 a.m. with a parade through the neighborhood led by either the Boilermaker Special (if its repairs are completed) or the Easter Bunny. Parents and children are encouraged to join the parade on foot, bike, in-line skates, wagon, scooter, stroller, or big wheel. The Easter Egg Hunt begins at the park at 11 a.m. Please listen for your child's age group to be called. The youngest group of children will hunt for their Easter eggs first, followed by the next age groups. The event organizers will announce the number of eggs that each child may take home. Rain date is Saturday at 3:00 p.m. or Sunday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m. Mark Your Calendars! UFNA
General Membership Meeting: Sunday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in City Hall. All
residents are urged to attend. (See article inside and May 1 Newsletter
for
further details.)
Letter from the President I am happy to report that our Neighborhood Association is moving ahead with our events and issues. We now have a vice president, Steven Knecht. We also welcome Paulette Moody as our Circulation Editor. It has been two years since we have had a full Executive Board. Karen Itin and Maria Genaris are working hard to organize the Easter egg hunt. I'm sure the Easter bunny will be as pleased as ever to see our neighborhood children run to collect their eggs. The effort to push for a city park on Dubois Street is moving along. At the general membership meeting, I'd like to establish a Special Committee to work on this issue. This will allow us to move faster on the issue without having to wait for executive board meetings. On March 31, I plan to attend the 3rd annual Neighborhood Summit for neighborhood association leaders in the greater Lafayette area. The topic this year is "building communities." Our neighborhood association is only as good as our volunteer leaders. I believe we have an excellent group of leaders. Join us! Marilyn

UFNA Board Notes The UFNA Board of Directors met March 1 in the Cumberland Elementary School library. Among the issues discussed and matters decided were:
Plans are underway to hold a general membership meeting for all residents of University Farm. The meeting will be Sunday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in West Lafayette City Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information to residents and to recruit volunteers for UFNA activities. We will invite elected city officials to attend. We will have a presentation on the new monthly recycling of cardboard and mixed paper. We will hear an update on the effort for the future city park on Dubois Street, and we will establish a Special Committee for the purpose of working on the Dubois Street park. All
residents of University Farm neighborhood are welcome to attend all general
membership meetings and all executive board meetings. Residents are not
required to be members of the Association to attend meetings. If anything
requires a vote at the general membership meeting, only members of the
Neighborhood Association are allowed to vote. To be a member, you must
have paid your dues during the current dues drive (Sept 2000 to August
2001). If you have not yet paid your dues of $15, please send a check to
Treasurer Betty Johnson.
Cardboard recycling for UFNA The UFNA Board approved a request by the West Lafayette Recycling Committee to try a weekend recycling drop-off for cardboard and mixed paper similar to the one now operating on the first weekend of the month in Barberry. This will be in addition to the existing curbside program. The city will bring recycling bins to an UFNA site on Friday morning of the designated weekend and remove them Monday morning. They will pick up trash around the bins and leave the area clean. This program will start in May. Watch for another announcement in the May 1 newsletter. Service Directory update UFNA
is compiling a new service directory with names of neighborhood teens who
babysit, mow lawns, shovel snow, or pet sit. If you want to be included,
please contact Linda Terhune, e-mail joterh@earthlink.net,
or look for sign-ups at the Easter Egg Hunt, general membership meetings,
and Ice Cream Social.
Dubois Street Park in works Residents in the newer sections of University Farm have been expecting a city park to be established on Dubois Street. The effort to nudge city officials and Purdue Research Foundation (PRF) officials into action is gathering steam. Dubois Street resident Joe Anderson and President Marilyn Augst have attended Community Issues Study Committee meetings for the purpose of promoting the park. These are the meetings established by Mayor Margerum and Purdue President Martin Jischke for community citizens to discuss town and gown problems. The Journal and Courier has reported on the meetings. One of the issues being considered by the Neighborhood Life Subcommittee is city parks. Joe and Marilyn were joined by several other University Farm residents at the most recent meeting. This group talked with Leon Trachtman, chair of the Parks & Recreation Board, about the park. In addition to these meetings, Marilyn Augst has met with Mayor Margerum to discuss the park. As directed by the UFNA Board, Marilyn and Vice President Steve Knecht sent a letter to PRF to ask them to donate the lots to the City of West Lafayette. We might receive an answer by May. At
the general membership meeting, we will establish a Special Committee,
according to UFNA Bylaws section X, for the purpose of working on the city
park on Dubois Street. Any UFNA members interested in the park can be on
the Special Committee. This committee can meet as often as required and
will report to the Board. If you are interested in helping with this effort,
please inform Marilyn Augst.
Co-chairs needed for Neighborhood Garage Sale The annual University Farm neighborhood garage sale is set for May 19. This is the day when any resident of University Farm can hold a garage sale and benefit from the common advertising and large numbers of shoppers. It costs only $5 to participate. Look for the participation form in the May 1 newsletter. Co-chairs
are needed for this year's sale. This is a once-a-year commitment that
lasts only several weeks in April and May. Duties include placing ads in
local newspapers; collecting participant registrations; typing a list of
participating houses; distributing the list, balloons, and signs to participants;
and placing signs at University Farm entrances the day of the sale. All
expenses are reimbursed. Previous co-chairs Nancy Peck and Marilyn Augst
are available for advice. Please consider volunteering for this. Call Marilyn
Augst by April 17 (if possible).
Volunteers with trucks sought We
are looking for people with trucks willing to help transport furniture
and large items left over from residents' garage sales to charitable organizations.
If you have a truck or know of an organization that could take this on
as a service project, please inform Marilyn Augst.
