Garage Sale set for May 19

Clean out those closets and garages. It’s time to start planning for the annual UFNA neighborhood garage sale. The neighborhood sale is really many individual garage sales, all held on the same day, to attract the most customers. Whoever wants to hold a sale that day is invited to participate for a modest $5 fee.

This year the neighborhood sale will be Saturday, May 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be one day only, on Saturday. If you would like to participate in the garage sale, please fill out the form enclosed in this newsletter and return it to Marilyn Augst by May 14 with the $5 fee.

Letter from the President

Over the past four months, I have attended various meetings of the Community Issues Study Committee, the West Lafayette Parks Board, and the Traffic Commission. I have listened to community leaders and learned about current issues. Now we are inviting some of those community leaders to come to our meeting on May 6 to speak to us and to listen to our concerns.

I am hoping for a good turnout at our meeting. Please do your best to arrange your schedule so you can attend. Our guest speakers are graciously spending an evening with us, so I'd like to honor them with a full house.

We will have time for questions and comments, on topics presented by the speakers and on any topics that concern our residents.

Easter Egg Hunt a success

The Easter Bunny came to University Farm on board a fire truck Saturday April 16, heralding the start of the annual UFNA Easter Egg Hunt.

The festivities began with an impromptu parade led by a City of West Lafayette fire truck. The bunny (city council member Gerry Keen in furry costume), standing in the truck's bucket, beckoned residents to join the fun. Children on bikes and scooters, in wagons and strollers, joined in behind the truck as it made its way through neighborhood streets.

With Mother Nature delaying her cold overcast a day, the balmy spring weather couldn't have been more perfect for an egg hunt. Some 2,000 bright plastic eggs stuffed with candy, stickers, and other goodies covered the grass. Children in age groups of 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9 and over collected the eggs. Everyone got something, with plenty of parents and grandparents beaming from the sidelines.

Special thanks to event co-chairs Karen Itin and Maria Genaris for the time and effort put into the event. Kudos, too, to the City of West Lafayette Fire Department for lending a fire truck to the fun and especially to firefighter Don Callahan for piloting the truck, with able navigation by Ann Broughton. Did you see the new signs? They will brighten up the egg hunts for many years to come.

Thank you's also to:

  • Egg stuffer: Marliene Bower
  • Egg hiders: Marie Barnes, Melanie Barnes, and Angela and Noelle Itin.
  • Bunny: Gerry Keen.
  • Event emcee: Marilyn Augst.
  • Next Day Signs: bright new signs.

Please don't pick the park's daffodils

At the conclusion of the April Parks & Recreation Board meeting, UFNA President Marilyn Augst spoke with Lee Booth, Parks Director, about landscaping at University Farm Park. He mentioned some landscaping they have added to the Park, such as plantings on the headwalls and tall grasses at the Park entrance.

Over the last two years, they planted big blue stem and other perennial grasses. Booth pointed out that the two Bald Cyprus trees on the entrance islands don't do well there because they are better suited to wet ground. The original landscaper made a mistake in placing them.

Booth mentioned that someone (children perhaps?) appears to be pulling out the daffodils. When daffodils die down for the season, they look like weeds. They should be left in place, with their bulbs, so that they bloom again next season. He said our park is down to one-fifth the number of daffodils that were originally planted. If someone provides new bulbs, he is willing to have his crew plant them.

Finally, by the time you read this, the wood bark should be replenished at the playground. The mulch around the bushes will take a little longer.

Please slow down

As we move into warm weather and lots of outdoor activities, many children will be playing outside. And sometimes they forget to look before going into the street. Parents need to remind children to be extra careful.

Drivers of all ages need to observe the speed limits and stop signs, whether you drive a minivan, sports car, motorcycle, or convertible. We've already had several complaints about people who routinely speed through University Farm. Let's do our best to avoid a tragedy!

 Help wanted

Lots of small tasks add up to create a well- functioning Association. If you can volunteer to do one or more of these one-time tasks, please contact Marilyn Augst. Thanks!

  1. At the May 6 general membership meeting, we need greeters at the door and check-in persons.
  2. For the neighborhood garage sale on May 19:
    • Place ads in four local newspapers during business hours. This requires two or three different trips on different days because of the newspaper deadlines. The ads are pre-written. You will be reimbursed for costs of ads.
    • Distribute garage sale kits (map, lists, balloons, and signs) to participants on Friday, May 18, around 6 p.m.
    • Place large signs at University Farm entrances at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 19.
    • Retrieve large signs at 4 p.m. on May 19.
  3. For UFNA Board meeting in July, we need someone who can host the meeting at their house.
  4. At ice cream social on August 26, we need people to scoop ice cream

Directories out soon

The neighborhood directories and crimewatch directories will be ready for distribution in late May  or June. Each street coordinator will bring a directory to every resident on their street. Thank you to Mary McKay and Anne Broughton who have worked hard to create these directories for the benefit of all University Farm residents.

Mary McKay has created the neighborhood directory for several years now, and will be ready to pass along the job in a year or two. She is looking for an apprentice to work on the directory with her next year. This volunteer needs to have his/her own computer and Word skills. If you are interested, please call Marilyn Augst at 463-9370.

Keys found

A large set of keys was found at University Farm Park on March 30. If you think they might be yours, contact the West Lafayette Police Department.
